Spain is the leader in advanced telecommunications networks in Europe, especially fibre optic, as Emilio Gilolmo, the executive vice-chairman of the Fundación Telefónica, said last month at the presentation of the annual report ‘The information society in Spain’. There are 18.6 million homes in Spain with fibre to the home connections and it is the country with the greatest number of fibre to the building connections, far ahead of other countries. In fact, using figures from December 2014, Spain had 15.04 million homes with fibre to the building, more than the next four countries combined (France, Portugal, Sweden and the Netherlands), who had 14.3 million between them.

Spain also has over 3.1 million fibre-optic users and is the country with the largest growth in Europe over the last year with 153%, ahead of Greece (100%), the United Kingdom (69%) and Switzerland (64%). Furthermore, 76% of homes have 4G mobile coverage – compared with 48% in 2014 – and coverage is almost total in cities of over 50,000 inhabitants.
